The location is excellent on a quiet clean beach. So if you're looking for peace and quiet, this is the place to be. It is just as beautiful as Nungwi but without the crowd and bars and noise. Though we did go to Nungwi for a sunset cruise which made us appreciate Matweme beach even more. Resort was easy to locate as it was well marked from the main road. The staff were excellent and welcoming. Very helpful in planning for things to do and booking transport. Rooms are basic but spacious, clean and with AC and fan and hot water. Beds were comfy. A clean small pool that has a baby pool. They have a generator that ran even the A/C so we were not inconvenienced by the frequent blackouts. Breakfast was okay..fruits, eggs, pancakes bread and butter, fresh juice and they made ma adrican tea. So definitely recommend it for families and anyone looking for peace and quiet.

Wow! I was blown away by my wonderful stay at Marafiki. The staff were all SO lovely. The food at the restaurant was excellent. We were upgraded to the villa for our 4 night stay and it absolutely exceeded expectations. The spa services provided by Happiness were FANTASTIC! I cannot more highly recommend Marafiki, particularly if you're looking for a more relaxed experience.

The beach was quiet and peaceful, not too crowded and exceptional hands-on service.
All the staff were very friendly and helpful. However, Farah and Moosa definitely stood out, they were always there anytime I needed anything, even catered to accommodate me with my phobia (don’t think every resort/hotel would’ve done that), I will forever be grateful for them.
Judy is an amazing masseuse! Visiting the spa is a must! The food was very good and you have to try yoga with Farah, very relaxing and she has a very soothing energy.

It’s very quiet, very few non hotel restaurants, overpriced food everywhere, can’t swim in the sea unless you don’t mind knee deep water. There’s no town, or town centre outside the beach hotels, so a long stay would be challenging if you want more than just lounging by the hotel pool.

Matemwe and its area is a quiet place where you can relax and enjoy the beach, the activities (snorkeling, swimming with dolphins) especially if you are a couple, because the village is not very full of enterteinments or night parties.

Crystal clear water - despite there being sea urchins - if you have rock/ aqua shoes - you can still swim and explore the waters and reefs.
The beaches are a lot quieter and peaceful than the busier beaches up north.
The tides are also fascinating to watch- you can walk out to the reefs and cycle along the beaches when they go out!

Marafiki gets a 10/10 from us on all fronts - breakfast, lunch, dinner, pool, cleanliness, hospitality, music, sustainability, beach, communication.
My husband and I stayed 4 nights at Marafiki after our Safari and had the most fabulous time. The rooms were very clean and quiet, and beautifully set up.
The food is exceptional - please try the tuna tartar and all the specials!
We had a relaxing time at the spa - you must try the full body scrub and massages.
We used the free kayaks during sunset and enjoyed the stunning view from the water. The water is shallow so even if you go far, you can get off the kayak and swim.
Since the hotel is east facing - sunrise is exceptionally beautiful. The water is still and shallow, and you can see all the fisherman walk up to the reef to catch the fish.
The hotel also arranged a cooking lesson in Matamwe village for us - we learned how to cook ‘muchuzi’ from scratch which was a very meaningful experience.
Overall- no negatives. We had the best time and will be back!

The beach is beautiful, but it's not really a beach you can swim on - there's a big tidal range - when it comes in it's quite choppy with lots of seaweed, and when it's out its corally with lots of urchins. But it's interesting to watch the local people looking for octopus and shellfish every day.
It's quite a quiet area - all the bars are part of hotels. A few nice local restaurants around. Quite a lot of beach touts, which we found off putting. Not loads of activities to do in the area - 1/2 day snorkelling/dolphin watching trips at Mnemba Island basically.
Since Matemwe is heavily influences by the tide, a pool at the hotel is crucial on the east side of Zanzibar. This hotel has a pool right by the beach. Staff is kind and rooms are comfy with good ac. Each evening the staff goes through the rooms spraying mosquito repellent which is a very nice touch. Restaurant prices are good for this area of Zanzibar. Close to Mnemba island and Dolphin snorkeling to make tours for scuba diving and snorkeling. Located on a very nice beach but beware the beach boys selling stuff there are very persistant.
This is my first trip to Zanzibar and I decided to start with Mnemba island and hence Matemwe Magic hotel is what I chose! I couldn’t have asked for anything more! Perfect in all ways. The staff is so polite and friendly. They understand you and take care of your requirements.
The rooms are clean and spacious and it feels amazinggg and most importantly safe! Coz I am a solo traveler.
I would totally recommend this hotel for all travelers coming to Zanzibar and especially plan their itinerary which includes Mnemba island!
Loved that the facilities are clean with it being a fairly new hotel! The food is amazing. Purni in the dining area is amazing! Everything is amazingA There is something for everyone at the buffet! The best part was the free gelatos! We miss them!!! The apps make it easy to manage the dining experiences. Overall ...amazing 5 star holiday resort with beautiful, white sandy beaches and clear, turquoise water👏👏and you will be happy to know we have sent many family members to the same hotel already. Excellent family resort✅️
The village is located in Matemwe, front of the beach. Sunset is magic if you achieve to wake up early.
Bungalows are very comfy with lot of privacy. Personnal are nice and respectful to your space but if needed, they are always supporting what you need. For those who would like a beer, note that the Village is not providing alcohol. However, you could find affordable local beers near to the hotel.
Food is fresh and tasty, breakfast as well. I recommend 100% for couple, group of friends or families.
This was our third stop on the island after Stone Town and Nungwi. We enjoyed the laid back atmosphere of the area and the hotel itself. We actually hardly left the hotel grounds because it was that accomodating. The pool and seating right at the beachfront were plenty and comfortable with enough shade. We were there on Wednesday when there was live music. Band was really nice. Food and drinks were good. The guys working the bar and tables were also all very friendly.
Rooms were large and clean.
If you’re looking for a peaceful haven with great comfort and completely quite vibes this is the place to be. Then again most people who head to Matemwe head there for the quiet. It’s closely located to the beach and the owner is very helpful . They have little notes of guidelines inside the rooms and also have tide timings across the day which is super helpful if you want to swim.
The breakfast was delicious with home made jams and baked stuff . Overall it’s a very peaceful vibe.
The place was amazing, the hotel was really authentic and I really liked the vibe. It’s perfect for solo travellers and families as well. The staff was extremely kind and friendly. The bungalows were clean and they provided all the necessary amenities for a perfect and comfortable stay. The breakfast and the dishes were exceeded my expectations, everything was really delicious. Absolutely can recommend HEBE Bungalows and hope I can come back one day!
I had a brilliant stay!
The environment is authentic and breathtaking.
The villa is cozy and clean. Ideal to be or to work as I did.
After my shorter working day, I was able to enjoy aquatic sports, great diving spot close by, fallowed by meal or drinks :)
Owners are very helpful and friendly and they have a deep knowledge of Zanzibar.
I will definitely come back! Thank you!
It’s a brand new hotel on the beach in very quiet and authentic part of Zanzibar (no pubs or clubs there). I was surprised with quality of finishing in the rooms (unusual for Zanzibar). Excellent service and food in restaurant (it has fine dining restaurant so during dinner you really feel like being in very good restaurant in Europe). Worth to spend few days there.
Super friendly staff - always a smile on their face and working as a team; relaxed atmosphere; free drinking water; all-day breakfast; best food in a hotel restaurant ever; reef-walk with the highly knowledgeable deaf gardener; stunning first-row view of the sunrise and many many more things. If we visit Zanzibar again this hotel will definitely be on our route
The hotel is comfortable and aesthetic, and it's in a absolutely beautiful location. I really enjoyed the breakfasts, and the dinners were tasty too, big portions! But the thing that made it all beyond wonderful is the staff. They are attentive and kind, and they really made us feel at home. I would definitely reconsider it.
We have been to several hotels in Zanzibar and this was one of the best. Really felt like paradise and has its own private access to the beach and sunbeds by the pool and by the beach. Very close to Mnemba snorkeling, in comparison to if one was at Nugwi, we paid $20 each for a trip to the corals for snorkeling.
This hotel was the best we staying in during our trip to Zanzibar. The decor, service, atmosphere and location were exceptional. The highlight was the standard of the food and cocktails - easily best food we had. And the breakfast buffet! It was top class. We hope to come again to this special place.
Amazing food and drinks, smiling staff that will care for your every request, great rooms, a wonderful garden and 2 clean pools with fantastic views. This is the best hotel of the 7 others that I stayed at in Zanzibar and I will be back for sure! Thank you to the management and the team!
We had a lovely stay at the Zanzibar retreat. The food is fantastic (we ate almost every meal at the hotel), the beachfront is beautiful, and the staff is very friendly. The room had AC and was very comfortable. The perfect place to spend a couple of days enjoying Zanzibar and relaxing.
We spent 4 great days in Zanzibar Retreat Hotel. The whole hotel is very well kept, the management is really kind and welcoming. They provide a cosy , safe and relaxed atmosphere. Rooms are clean, just as the pool. We can recommend their restaurant, foods were always great.
The owners of the place were wonderful people. Really committed in providing the best possible experience for their guests. The location was great and the small hotel was built with the intention of providing quality hospitality but with maintaining the local colour.
really clean, small and personal. lovely beach short walk to metemwe to have bite to eat, watch fishermen or to use other hotel for the day. staff really welcoming. laid back atmosphere - the true Zanzibar way :) Plenty of pool space for guests.
